Race To Zero, a global campaign promoted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), released its 2023 Progress Report on December 6.

The 2023 Progress Report

Race To Zero is a global campaign rallying non-state actors – including companies, cities, regions, financial, educational, and healthcare institutions – to take rigorous and immediate action to halve global emissions by 2030 and deliver a healthier, fairer zero carbon world. Currently, approximately 13,500 organizations worldwide are participating in Race To Zero, taking action to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and move to net zero by 2050 at the latest.

JCI Race To Zero Circle, a member circle of the Japan Climate Initiative (JCI), is an official partner of Race To Zero campaign and is encouraging non-state actors from Japan to participate in Race To Zero. This year’s progress report covers several of JCI’s activities.

■Race To Zero 2023 progress

There are now approximately 13,500 Race To Zero members, an increase of more than 2,000 since the last progress report and nearly double the number since its launch at COP26 in 2021.

The new members come from 30 new countries and now cover 146 countries. There was a notable growth in the membership in the Asia Pacific and Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

SMEs now account for over half of the members of the Race representing a 39% growth since 2022.

A new criterion, 5th P ‘Persuade’ was added to the Race to Zero criteria.

■Description regarding JCI

  • Japan Climate Initiative published a Japanese translation of the Race To Zero 5th P Handbook.
  • JCI Race To Zero Circle has gained 4 new signatories this year, bringing their membership to 34 total. (as of October 20. 35 members on Dec 19)
  • Japan Climate Initiative hosted transition planning webinars with the 2023 Japan Climate Action Summit.
  • In Japan, 303 non-Party stakeholders called on the government to supply the vast majority of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2035, and to introduce a carbon pricing system earlier than planned to ensure that the 2030 emission reduction target is achieved and further raised to the next level. This effort was coordinated by Race to Zero Partner, Japan Climate Initiative.
