On Monday, December 25, 2023, the Japan Climate Initiative (JCI) Secretariat attended a meeting of the Task Force for Comprehensive Review of Laws and Regulations for Renewable Energy and Other Resources, whose agenda was “Introduction of Carbon Pricing at the International Level”.
Based on the “Carbon Pricing Proposal by Japan Climate Initiative (JCI) Members: Toward Simultaneous Achievement of 2030 GHG Emission Reduction Targets and Enhanced International Competitiveness” released on December 5, the JCI Secretariat conveyed the expectations and concerns of JCI members regarding the GX Promotion Act and called for the introduction of more effective carbon pricing.
Minister for Regulatory Reform Taro Kono stated, “As the demand for decarbonization increases around the world, a rapid shift to an industrial structure compatible with decarbonization will ensure the international competitiveness of Japanese companies and lead to sustainable growth of the Japanese economy,” and added, “Based on today’s discussion, I believe we need to examine ways to make the GX Promotion Act more effective.
JCI will maintain an ongoing dialogue with the government to ensure that Japan’s policies are consistent with the 1.5 degree target and lead to a steady reduction of greenhouse gases.
