On April 19, 2021, the United Nations COP26 High-Level Champion for Climate Action, Nigel Topping, convened Japanese business leaders to organize a roundtable event to showcase climate actions led by the Japanese businesses and accelerating momentum in the pursuit of “Race To Zero” in Japan.

“Race To Zero” is the global campaign to mobilize non-state actors aiming to achieve net zero by 2050 at the latest towards COP26 to be held in Glasgow later this year. The Japan Climate Initiative (JCI) launched the “Race To Zero Circle”, part of the campaign’s official partner, to promote participation of Japanese non-state actors in Race To Zero.

JCI worked together to organize the roundtable event as an event partner in collaboration with the Japan Climate Leaders’ Partnership (JCLP), the Asia Investor Group on Climate Change (AIGCC), and the British Embassy in Tokyo.

The speakers, who are part of JCI, included Mr. Yoshinori Yamashita, President & CEO, Ricoh, Mr. Alistair Dormer, Executive VP Chief Environment Officer, Hitachi, Mr. Ryosuke Mizouchi, Senior Executive Officer, Kirin, Mr. Takejiro Sueyoshi, JCI Representative, and Ms. Kahori Miyake, Co-Chair, JCLP, which is a member organization of the JCI steering committee. In addition, Hon Alok Sharma, COP26 President Designate, HMA Julia Longbottom CMG, UK Ambassador to Japan, Hon Shinjiro Koizumi, Minister of Environment & Climate Change, and Mr. Hiro Mizuno, UN Special Envoy on Innovative Finance and Sustainable Investment, gave keynote speeches in the event.
