– Non-State Actors co-create and collaborate to further accelerate decarbonization to achieve the 1.5\u00b0C target.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Japan Climate Initiative (JCI) held the Japan Climate Action Summit (JCAS) 2023 on Friday, October 6, 2023.<\/p>\n

As indicated in the IPCC Sixth Assessment Synthesis Report, a 65% reduction in global CO2 emissions by 2035 is required to limit the global average temperature increase to 1.5\u00b0C. To achieve this goal, each country must accelerate reductions by raising its targets and also strengthening reduction measures toward 2030.<\/p>\n

JCAS2023 was held to aim to build momentum for climate action in Japan, accelerate concrete actions by all actors, and provide a push to strengthen the Japanese government’s reduction targets and climate policies to be consistent with the 1.5\u00b0C target that the world is aiming for.<\/p>\n

– A variety of speakers from Japan and abroad took the stage.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the summit, video messages were given by Michael R. Bloomberg, Founder, Bloomberg LP and Bloomberg Philanthropies UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions and Razan Al Mubarak, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for the UAE, COP28. As keynotes, Martin Skancke, Board Chair, PRI and Mark Porter, Vice President of the Clean Energy Buyers Association, provided an international perspective respectively on the role of finance in combating climate change and on the current climate crisis and the potential of renewable energy.<\/p>\n

In addition, there were two panel sessions on “Acceleration of Decarbonization” and “Co-Creation & Cooperation in Decarbonization”, and a top leadership session with top executives from corporations and a university.\u00a0 These sessions featured a variety of speakers from JCI member organizations, who shared the forefront of efforts by non-state actors in Japan to achieve steady emission reductions consistent with the 1.5\u00b0C target.<\/p>\n

– Online communication tool made JCAS experience participatory.<\/strong><\/p>\n

An online communication tool was introduced and all participants were invited to participate in the sessions through the questionnaire while joining in person or online.<\/p>\n

This year, for the first time in four years, a reception was held at the venue after the Summit. A lot of participants joined the reception to connect with people from various sectors to share problems and ideas with each others.<\/p>\n
